Upload A WordPress Theme

Now your WordPress hosting account is set up, you’ve installed WordPress and realised the standard themes are a bit bland.

There are millions of WordPress themes out there, to choose from – all equally as good as each other and all for different skill levels. Today I’m going to show you how to upload a pretty easy one, from Elegant Themes*.

Please be aware that if you click the Elegant Themes link, and go on to make a purchase, we’ll receive a small commission – which will probably go towards cakes. Don’t support obesity, don’t click that link!! ;)

Right, now onto the serious business of installing this theme. For this, you’ll need to have already purchased the theme and downloaded it onto your computer. All themes will come in .zip format – there is NO need to unzip/extract the files.

From your WordPress dashboard you’ll need to click the Appearance tab on the menu down the left-hand side.

From there, you’ll need to click on the ‘Install Themes’ tab, right next to the ‘Manage Themes’ tab which you’ll already be on.

After you’ve done that, some new options will appear just below those tabs. You want to click on the ‘Upload’ option.

Unless you know the full address of where you saved the theme, you’ll want to select the ‘Browse’ option.

Now you’ll need to find where you download the .zip file to on your computer, select it and then press ‘Open’.

As you’ll see from the picture above, Elegant Themes also give you the Photoshop images relating to the file – I believe this is only if you own a Developers Account though, which anyone can, it’s just more expensive.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be returned to the previous screen where you’ll want to click the ‘Install’ button.

You’ll then see on screen the install followed by a confirmation that the theme was installed successfully. The only thing left to do is select the ‘Activate’ option.

And that’s it, your brand new WordPress theme has been successfully installed.

Increase WordPress Upload Limit

Please note the screenshots shown are taken from a Rosier Internet UK web hosting package, other hosts may vary. The principals however, remain the same.

So, what some people don’t know is that WordPress have an upload limit, which can be quite problematic when uploading pictures and themes. To check yours simply go into your WordPress Dashboard, select Media and Add New, see below.

As you can see (highlighted in red – taken from my personal blog) the maximum upload file size for this specific account is 100MB, which if that’s the case you’ll never have to change it, infact 16/25MB would be sufficient for most peoples needs.

The problem comes when some have a 2MB upload limit.

In this tutorial, I’ll take you step-by-step through the process of increasing your upload limit to 25MB.

Firstly, you’ll been to be logged into your hosting control panel.

Once you’re in, you need to go to ‘File Manager’.

Then we need to create a new file. Seen below, the icon highlighted with the red box.

You’ll then be asked to name the file. You need to call it “php.ini”, then press ok.

You’ll then be taken to edit the file, you want to enter the following:

memory_limit = 25M
upload_max_filesize = 25M
post_max_size = 25M

Then scroll down and press save.

Now we need to move the file to the public directory.

So you need to highlight the file and select the ‘Move File’ button, highlighted below.

You’ll be asked which directory to move the file to, enter “public_html” and press ‘OK’.

Just to confirm the file moved correctly, look in the public directory and make sure the ‘php.ini’ file is there. You may have more files than us (as this is only for tutorial purposes), so it may be further down the list.

Change E-mail Account Password

To ensure your e-mail accounts remain secure, we suggest you immediately change the password once the account is set up and also regularly, just to be on the safe side.

Log into your hosting control panel.

Click on the ‘Mail Boxes’ link.

You then need to scroll down, and find your e-mail address below the ‘Modify Mail Boxes’ header. Next to your address, you’ll see the password simply drag the mouse over it, delete the contents of the field and enter your new password, and press modify.

And your password has been changed. This method is, of course, only for administrators.

If you are not the administrator, you need to follow the following steps:

Go to www.outitgoes.com and select ‘Change Password?’ from the options.

You then need to enter your e-mail address, existing password and new password, twice. Then just hit the ‘Change!’ button, and you’re all done.

Creating E-mail Addresses

So you’ve purchased your UK web hosting package from Rosier Internet, and now you need you to set up your e-mail addresses? Here’s how you do it (don’t blink though, it only takes a minute):

Log into your hosting control panel.

Click on the ‘Mail Boxes’ link.

Then simply enter the address you wish to set up, you can toggle the domain here, if you have multiple linked to the hosting package. And click ‘Create’.

Congratulations, you’ve set up your first e-mail address. Repeat this process for as many e-mail accounts you need, up to your limit.

Install WordPress

If you’d prefer, you can download this blog post in pdf format.

Okay so you’ve purchased your WordPress hosting package from Rosier Internet and want to get blogging/creating your WordPress website.

Thankfully you haven’t got to download WordPress and upload it to our servers, thanks to our one-click install. We currently don’t have a tutorial for manual install of WordPress but that will be coming in the tutorial blog series, we’ll place a link here and notify you via our social media platforms when it is available.

So you need to sign into your Rosier Internet web hosting control panel, and then follow these instructions. If you don’t know how to access your hosting control panel, then click the link for the tutorial.

Scroll down to CGI Scripts, and WordPress Blog should be the first icon, click on it.

The following page will be displayed. Here you will need to decide where you want people to view the site. For example, this tutorial is being created on our Rosier Demo account and I’ve chosen for it to be seen at www.rosierdemo.co.uk (please note: the current contents of this site is not necessarily from this tutorial), however by entering ‘blog’ in the Installation Directory after /homes/sites/rosierdemo.co.uk/public_html/ then it would be displayed at www.rosierdemo.co.uk/blog. After you’ve chosen, please click the Install Now button.

Generally, installation is less than a minute. You’ll then be shown this confirmation message.

You now need to click on your domain name (http://www.rosierdemo.co.uk/). You’ll be taken to your site to continue the installation.

Once arriving at your site, you’ll be asked to choose between the single or multi blog installation, for the purpose of this tutorial we’re going to go with single, as it’s generally the most common.

After selecting ‘Single’ above, you’ll be taken to the next stage of the installation, shown below. Fear not, you’re almost done.

You’ll need to complete the information needed section below, as I have done. Entering the Site Title, Username (default is admin, can stick with it or change it – no spaces allowed) , a secure password (twice) and your e-mail address.
Please note: When entering the second password it will inform you the passwords do not match, just continue entering the password as they only match when they are completed in full.

Finally, you need to select the privacy option for the site, and then click the ‘Install WordPress’ button. Personally, I always allow my site to appear in the search engines as it is important for me that we get listed as it’ll help drive traffic to the site. Fear not though, you can change the options at a later date, simply by going into Settings (within your WordPress account) and Privacy.

And you are done, congratulations!!

For future reference, your WordPress account can be accessed, by adding /wp-admin/ to the end of your domain. For example, mine would be www.rosierdemo.co.uk/wp-admin/. Alternatively, if I’d added the site to my ‘blog’ directory (www.rosierdemo.co.uk/blog) then it would be accessed at www.rosierdemo.co.uk/blog/wp-admin/.

If you’d prefer to have someone else install it for you, we can take care of that and the installation of any themes or plugins that you want at the same time. Please contact us for a quote.

Accessing Your Rosier Internet Hosting Control Panel
